Celebrating With Cash, Chow, and Valentines
Valentines, cupcakes, and cash oh my!
All for us, the students – but why?
Well, along with basketball tournament this coming week, The Studio for Writing and Speaking will be celebrating “Make a Date with the Studio” for our benefits. You can automatically be entered in a drawing for a $50 cash prize when making an appointment on Moodle and going to The Studio for a second opinion on a paper, speech, or any other work that needs editing.
Also, on Tuesday you can write a Valentine message during lunch and supper at Union Market that will later be hand-delivered to the dorms. And to satisfy your sweet tooth, don’t miss the cupcake decorating at The Studio, room 116 in the Library, on Thursday from 6-10 p.m.
Of course, as intelligent college students, we know that nothing is ever entirely free. Oh, don’t worry, there’s no catch to The Studio’s handouts! You don’t have to scan your card and sit through a talk to get a cupcake. The reason for the festivities is merely to bring awareness to what The Studio can offer to students.
As college students we’ve all experienced that moment where you’re staring at a computer screen longing for a profound breakthrough to help you finish writing that paper that’s due in a couple hours. Or the one where you’ve finally completed that paper and, wanting it to be over already, printed it out thinking, It’s good enough. In a moment like this, The Studio is the perfect friend.
The reason for celebration this coming week is in honor of International Writing Centers Week (IWCW), a celebration all over the world that provides a reminder that The Studio cares about your success and is there to support writers and speakers throughout the process.
Susy Gomez, student director of The Studio, recalls her first time heading there for help. “I thought that these people were geniuses that were going to look at my paper. Now that I work there I know that it’s a combined effort. We work together; it’s a team effort. If there was a question we really didn’t know, we’d ask Tanya.”
Students can have a one-on-one session with peer consultants to get started, clarify ideas, get help with format, find useful resources, and get any help they need on their work. Not only will you receive an extra set of eyes, but also a listening ear to help you talk through your ideas or questions.
“Talking is an essential part of writing of speaking. Talking before you even begin, or talking in the middle, or talking in the end is core to your process as a writer,” says Tanya Cochran, the faculty director for The Studio.
Whether it’s talking, reading, or writing that you could use assistance in, head over to The Studio for a chance at $50. And if you’re looking for a job next year, keep in mind that The Studio is open for applications. Gomez says of her job, “I can do so many fun things. If you have an idea you have a position to make a difference and get things going.” To which Cochran answers, “She works with me and she makes me work.”
If you’re interested in a career, cupcakes, cash, or valentines, remember The Studio!
