"It's super hard to be excited about something when starting your last year of college," admits senior music major Ben VandeVere, frontman of "R3sonate."
Although college is arguably the best time of your life, it’s in turn a time where all good things seem to come to an end. Throughout all the interviews I've conducted for this three-part series, I've realized the inescapable truth: bands break up.
Student-led groups such as “R3sonate,” “No Trace of Earth,” and “The Contrary” are all spearheaded by May 2016 graduates. Between VandeVere and Brad Carlson (No Trace of Earth's leader), neither have counted out the continuation of their music brainchildren once they move on with life.
Elliott Moseley, co-frontman of The Contrary, expresses his doubts about the status of the project, "I honestly think it'll be very difficult for “The Contrary” to keep going once we graduate. We may all end up in different places. Our lives are already busy enough that our time together as a band is limited."
However, when I spoke to Mike Mennard, adjunct professor and former full-time humanities professor, about his accomplished kids’ music project called “The Mighty Magic Pants” and the current lineup, this is what he had to say:
"Bands get together, and they break up. The sooner you come to grips with that, the less breakups hurt."
Mennard, who is still coming to grips with the loss of Pirate Jake, has a lot planned for the future. As we spent almost forty minutes occupying the office space of Tamara Seiler with our rambunctiousness, I realized that Mennard's will—though shaken—was not stirred.
Despite all of the obstacles, as long as there is a determined effort to create, nothing can interfere. Together or apart, the bond of musicianship still holds strong.
AJ Valcin is a super senior who enjoys communicating and contemplating. Every state he has lived in begins with the letter “N.” He is the most obsessive music nerd you may know, and anything involving vanilla ice cream and gummy treats are his weaknesses. AJ also wants you to “download my mixtape, bruh.” - a Soundcloud exclusive under the alias “A2nelito.”
