5 ‘back-to-school’ themed movies to celebrate a new semester
As the summer comes to a close, a new semester begins. For some this is an exciting time to reunite with friends, while others are feeling the existential dread of early-morning alarms and cramming for exams. Whatever camp you fall into, there’s one thing that can always brighten the mood and get you into the back-to-school spirit: school-themed movies. Here are five of my personal favorite classic movies that are certain to get you ready to take this school year head-on.
Napoleon Dynamite (2004)
Directed by Jared Ness, this cult classic offers a brilliant and unique spin on the cliché ‘nerds vs. popular kids’ trope while capturing the mundanity of school life in a small, Midwestern town. The entire film was made and produced for just $400,000, and the low-budget acting and set design elevates the cringe-comedy elements of the story and makes this movie perfect for anyone who enjoys that style of humor. While it’s certainly not for everyone, “Napoleon Dynamite” contains hundreds of quotable scenes that you will likely find yourself using regularly.
The Dead Poets Society (1989)
Directed by Peter Weir, this film takes place at an all-boys preparatory school where Mr. Keating, an English teacher played by Robin Williams, uses unconventional teaching methods to inspire his students to open up and express themselves through poetry. His teaching challenges his students to think critically and reject conformity.
21 Jump Street (2012)
In this comedy film, Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill take on the roles of police officers assigned to a covert mission. Their task? Infiltrate a high school to uncover an underground drug ring. This undercover mission offers them a second chance to relive the high school experience they missed out on and leads to a unique bond between the two officers. As they immerse themselves in the world of teenage drama, they navigate the challenges of adolescence while trying to fulfill their duty.
Rudy (1993)
Based on a true story, this sports drama focuses on the life of Rudy Reuttiger, a freshman with dreams of playing for the Notre Dame football team. Despite facing numerous obstacles and doubters, Rudy’s determination and unwavering spirit allow him to pursue his dream relentlessly. The film shows the value of hard work and motivation in the presence of seemingly insurmountable hurdles.
Good Will Hunting (1997)
This film centers around the story of Will Hunting, a janitor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) with extraordinary mathematical abilities. Despite his rough background, one professor offers Will the opportunity to avoid jail time by studying mathematics and receiving therapy. With exceptional performances by Matt Damon and Robert Williams, this Best Picture-winning film is a testament to the transformative power of education and personal growth.
