Clocktower editor-in-chief and assistant editor win Sushi Night competition

In case you missed it, November 11 was Sushi Night. Read the official report before you read this experience.

Annika and I signed up for the event and planned our matching outfits, green Clocktower crewnecks and Star Trek badges made of paper. We named our team “Picard & Riker.”

We had a rough start; the first round did not go well for us. Our presentation was awful and we barely finished in time. However, they tasted great. Because of the wait time for the microwaves, we decided to not use the raw egg, going with Stripples and tofu for the main base. We utilized the other required item, honey, in a glaze.

When the second round started, we were much more prepared. Annika had the brilliant idea of using the peanut butter to make a Thai sushi roll. This roll included bell peppers and tofu, as well as spicy mayo. Our presentation was much better. We formed a flower out of the triangular pieces. We also used the required Goldfish crackers by crushing them and sprinkling them on top. When I tried it, I would say that it tasted strongly of peanut butter. But whatever it was, it was good enough to take us to the final round.

The final round was dessert sushi. Our mystery bag included pop rocks and vanilla frosting. We got cream cheese to mix with the frosting, and we added sweet potato and cucumber to the roll. With no other idea on how to utilize the pop rocks, we sprinkled them on top. This was quite the experience to eat. I didn’t hate it, but I was surprised by it. Professor Graves did share after the event that if he had to eat any more sweet rolls, he was going to be sick — so it’s best that it was saved for last.

Congratulations to the second-place team, Aubrey Benton and Lyndsey Elsey, who work as Clocktower Politics Columnist and News Editor respectively. Does working at the Clocktower make you good at sushi? We don’t know for sure, but the evidence seems to point that way. Email annika.cambigue@ucollege.edu to apply for a job at the Clocktower.

We’re thankful that we won, but it was definitely a surprise. We were fully prepared to lose in round one. And now we have bragging rights for a year!
