Start off strong: 5 tips to have a great year

1. Get (and stay) organized

Whether it’s a planner, journal, calendar or app, find the way that works best for you and helps keep everything in order. Try to look ahead at the syllabus for each of your classes and see the due dates for major assignments, papers, projects and tests. Make sure to put these in your chosen organizer. You can also add important reminders such as work schedules, advisor meetings and plans with friends.

2. Procrastination is the enemy

Keep up on your current assignments. Do your best to not procrastinate. Start working on large projects or papers now if you can. It will be easier to work on it in chunks rather than pulling an all-nighter the day before it is due. A little here and a little there can make a huge difference! Try to limit distractions. A great way to do this is to set aside study time or set limits on gaming or social media apps.

3. Take care of yourself

Your health is important, not only physically but mentally as well! Do your best to prioritize sleep and try to get at least eight hours each night. Try to eat foods that fuel your body and mind. Find a type of movement that you enjoy! There are many on-campus options, such as the gym, weight room, tennis and basketball courts and the pool.

4. Don’t be afraid to ask for help

Let’s be honest; college can be tough! However, you don’t have to do it on your own. Whether it’s tutoring from the Teaching and Learning Center, help with a paper or speech from the Studio for Writing and Speaking, talking with a school counselor or just reaching out to a good friend or family member, always remember that there are people who you can reach out to for support.

5. Don’t forget to have fun

All work and no play makes . . . well, you get the idea. Although college can be a lot of hard work, take some time to have fun. Go to a SA event or a meeting with one of your clubs. Hang out in the student center and enjoy a game of ping pong. Worship together with your friends and fellow students at Family worship, church or V2. Or take a night to eat pizza and watch Netflix in your room. Whatever it looks like for you, take some time to relax and have fun.
