Navigating the maskless world
The mask mandate is officially lifted, which means that we all have to relearn how to navigate a world of full faces again. I don’t know about most of you, but it feels as if I have to learn my facial expressions and social cues again. It has been a long time since we’ve had to use them. As we continue to get used to our new old normal, here are a few things to remember as we enter the brave new world of no masks!
Recognizing people
Be aware of the fact that you might not be able to recognize people as well. In these last few days, seeing people’s whole faces has thrown me for a loop! We have only seen one another with half a face for almost two years. In other words, double check before calling out to someone and be patient with others.
Facial expressions
Don’t forget that everyone can see your facial expressions now. I know, it has been nice to be able to express our true feelings without consequences. Nevertheless, you can’t hide that smirk or laugh behind your mask anymore! Also, be cautious when sharing secrets out in public. Lip reading is now a thing again. Consider yourself warned!
Overuse of eyebrows
I think we all have somewhat perfected the use of our eyes and eyebrows to communicate emotions and expressions because, well, it was the only thing people could see. Now, we no longer have to overcompensate. Just something to keep in mind as you navigate through using your whole face again!
Check your teeth and grab some gum
That piece of broccoli in your teeth won’t be able to hide anymore! Neither will your bad breath. So, after your delicious meal in the cafe, check a mirror and grab a piece of gum on your way out.
Be considerate
Two years ago, we all had to adjust to a world of half-faces and strange handshakes. As we continue to hopefully and prayerfully move back to normal, remember to be compassionate and kind towards others. We are all relearning and it is going to take some time. It’s probably going to be awkward around here for a while! But that is okay. Just keep on and keep smiling, because everyone will actually be able to see it now!
