Library hosts annual fair
The Ella Johnson Crandall Memorial Library was buzzing with excitement last Thursday, Sep. 21 – quite literally. The annual library fair was themed around honey, hives and anything to do with bees.
The library fair is held to bring students into the library to learn about the multiple resources available to our campus community for study help, reading enjoyment, etc. “I think this year’s was honestly my favorite that I’ve seen this far,” said Erin Cramer, a student assistant at the library and sophomore health and human performance major. “We had all sorts of … beekeeping equipment, information on [bees], honey sticks, tea, lemonade…it was a whole vibe,” Cramer said. One highlight of the display included a full beekeeping suit loaned by Christina Burden-Page, director of the Biomedical Science Program at Union, with a cutout photo of her face inside.
Students who attended the fair received prize bags with honey flavored candy, lip balm and more. The bags also included brochures on how to easily access library resources.
Help from the library will be even more abundant this year thanks to two new employees joining the current circulation/reference assistant, Marcia Nordmeyer. Julie Bocock-Bliss has recently stepped into the role of library director, and Alejandra Hutchison serves as research and instruction librarian. Together, this powerhouse of full-time staff in addition to the many student workers is excited to help students in reading for fun, educational and vocational needs.
The library also offers much more than books. Study rooms are available for individual or group study; some containing whiteboards for visual learners. Free Windows computer access in addition to black and white printing services are available, as well as the powerhouse of achievement that can be found in the nearby Student Success office. Online services include several EBSCO databases as well as interlibrary loans.
“We have reference materials for any and all homework you may be working on, anything just from casual curiosities to [the] end of your papers,” said Cramer. “The Writing Studio can provide proofreading and feedback for anything that you are working on. And if you’re not sure where to start or what you’re looking for, we have reference catalogs. And someone here ought to be able to help you!”
