Advent Health NASCAR team visits Union

On Friday, September 27th, NASCAR racers Jimmie Johnson and Eric Jones visited Union. Eric Jones’ Toyota Camry (number 43) was on display in front of the Reiner Wellness center from 9-5 p.m. for students to look at. Many people lined up for autographs and photos with the drivers from 3-4 p.m. and students who signed up were given wrist bracelets to secure a spot in line. From students to faculty to visiting parents and community members, there were many people in attendance. Refreshments were also made available.

Matthew Toews, a student from Union Adventist University, said, “When I was fourteen, we would go out into the cornfields to detassel the rows. Our bus group had this one guy who was a huge fan of Jimmie Johnson, so we would always yell ‘Forty-Eight! Go Jimmie!’ when we got to the end of a row, and the entire cornfield would go wild, and it was epic! I always thought it would be neat to meet Jimmie Johnson, and here he is!”

The individuals and groups at the event could take photos with the drivers and the cars. Afterwards, they went inside the Reiner Wellness Center gym where a panel discussion was held and were given tickets for a raffle.

At 4 p.m., President Yami Bazan began the panel with a prayer and Advent Health representatives introduced both Jimmie Johnson and Eric Jones before leading out the panel discussion. Both drivers were encouraged to talk about their backgrounds and what made them interested in racing for NASCAR. Jimmie Johnson grew up in Southern California and said that he “always knew what he wanted to do, it was just a matter of getting there.” Eric Jones emphasized how important his mother’s support has been throughout his career. The Advent Health representative also spoke, highlighting leadership qualities that are important for people to have: strong character, strong intellect, and strong drive.

One final piece of advice that both drivers provided was what they would say to their eighteen-year old self. Johnson said “Be patient and learn lessons the first time they come.” Jones said simply, “Slow down.” At the end of the panel, raffle tickets were drawn to win prizes like signed helmets, a jersey and Southwest Airline gift cards. After visiting Union, Jimmie Johnson and Eric Jones left for Kansas to participate in a race.
