Five Fallish Films

Despite the fact that the leaves are just barely turning colors at Union, we’re already halfway through fall. Autumn has high expectations and is a very popular time of year. Like every season, fall has some themed films that go along with the overall feel.

Here are five autumn movies that fit the aesthetic:

Dead Poets Society

A film starring Robin Williams, “Dead Poets Society” is the epitome of fall films. It surrounds a group of boys attending a preparatory boarding school in the late 1950s. These friends are held to very rigid rules and a majority of them are from wealthy families and/or controlling parents. However, their English teacher makes them fall in love with poetry and the theater. “Dead Poets Society” is one of the best and most heartbreaking films of all time and a worthy watch every fall season.

The Goonies

Though one might not automatically think of “The Goonies” as a fall film, it certainly takes place in October. The movie centers around a group of rowdy kids, called the Goonies, who are being forced out of their homes by a wealthy land developing company. However, young Sean Astin, Mikey in the film, makes his friends go on an extravagant adventure in search of One Eyed Willy’s long lost treasure. They encounter some villains who are also after the treasure, and only their friendship and perseverance can get them to their ultimate goal: saving their homes from certain destruction.

Clue

A beloved, but not that well-known classic, “Clue” is a film based on the iconic board game. Trapped inside an old mansion, the stacked cast must rush to figure out which of them is the murderer of their blackmailer, Mr. Body, before the cops arrive and detain them all. Is the murderer Miss Scarlet in the billiard room with the candlestick? “Clue” is a comedic and fun watch for all viewers during the fall season.

Pride and Prejudice (2005)

A more well-known film based on the iconic novel, “Pride and Prejudice” fits all the demographics a fall movie should occupy. The setting, characters and enemies-to-lovers romance trope fits the autumn aesthetic perfectly. It is a perfect film to watch on a cozy fall night.

Knives Out

Similar to the premise of Clue, “Knives Out” focuses on the presumed murder of the wealthy owner of a large mansion. But who killed the millionaire? As the family of the deceased gather around to hear the will, a major plot twist changes the suspect list. But only Daniel Craig as Benoit Blanc, a famous detective, can solve this riddle. “Knives Out” is another fallish movie that people who enjoy a good mystery will love.
