Voting resources in Nebraska

2024 election year

It is that time of year once again — voting season. There are multiple reasons why people should vote. One reason is to see change or keep the status quo. A wise mother once said, “If you don’t ask, the answer is always no.” In this case, if you don't cast your vote, your voice will go unheard. Often, younger generations do not indulge in politics, as is indicated with the lower turnout rate for Gen Z. Since politicians do not get votes from Gen Z, they often will do nothing to win their vote. If more Gen Z showed up to the polls politicians would notice and try to win their votes. This election is no exception. Your vote on Nov. 5, 2024, will place an individual in a position of great power, who will you choose? Here are the websites for the two main presidential candidates: kamalaharris.com and donaldjtrump.com.

The following is information on how to vote in Nebraska. Deadlines and requirements are different in each state so it is important to know the state’s voting process. Keep in mind that there are requirements in order to vote in Nebraska. In this state, one must be at least 18 years old on the day of voting, hold US citizenship, live in Nebraska and have not been found to be mentally incompetent in a court. Felons can also vote, so long as they have served their full sentence and aren’t on parole.

Registering to vote in Nebraska is closing up fast. On Oct. 18, registration online and by mail ended. There is still an open window to register in person until 6:00 pm on Oct. 25. It is important to locate the correct country election official, since it differs between counties. One must also present an identification: driver’s license, ID or social security card. Once registered, voting is the next step. Nebraska is a “no-excuse” state which means reasons for an absentee ballot are not required. The absentee ballot must be received before the polls close on Nov. 5th. In-person voting takes place on Nov. 5th, which means the new president will be chosen in just 13 days. It is critical to secure transportation and find time in the day to go to the polls. School, work, not having a vehicle and other important duties can get in the way of voting. It is important to ensure that these obstacles can be addressed so that you’ll have an opportunity to place your vote. Every vote counts. This is an opportunity to make change for the future.
