We Live in Time
A film review
Hitting a stranger with your car may not be everyone's ideal way of meeting their future partner but it certainly worked in John Crowley’s new film “We Live in Time.” Released on October 11, the movie stars Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh. Both actors are renowned for their roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as well as other award winning films “Hacksaw Ridge” and “Little Women,” respectively.
The plot is very complex and is not told like a normal, every day rom-com or rom-dram. The film moves throughout time — hence the name — touching across various timelines in both of the main character’s lives. Though this may be confusing at first, viewers can discern the difference between present and past by observing the hairstyles Florence Pugh dons or whether or not Andrew Garfield is wearing glasses. Both actors give convincing and compelling performances which draw the viewer to the characters. The audience wants them to succeed and get their happily-ever-after while knowing that it is not the purpose of the film. Their charisma and charm make for a lovable duo both on and off the screen.
The film is very complex but one that will give a sense of joy to the viewer. It centers around Tobias and Almut and their story. The main gist of the plot is that Tobias is hit by Almut’s car and from there, their relationship takes off. This scene in particular is displayed in a very comedic fashion, taking on the essence of a romcom. However, as the plot moves forward and the duo begin dating, along with the ever-changing timeline, one begins to see the more dramatic side of the film.
“We Live in Time” demonstrates the qualities of life in a real and believable way. While most romcoms focus on the joys of life and the happily-ever-afters, this film gives the viewer a realistic idea of what it is like to be in a relationship with a partner who is suffering. It shows the highs and lows and forces the viewer to consider what time really means.
This is not a film for the faint-hearted. As it is a rom-drom, it has a tear-jerking ending that is not for everyone. Though, unlike other disheartening romantic films, “We Live in Time” leaves the viewer feeling satisfied with the ending of the movie. It’s a great film that encapsulates the meaning of time and a distinct reminder that time is short and we should spend what we have with our loved ones before they’re gone.
