Intramurals Update

Interviews with players

You’ve heard about Warrior’s basketball. You’ve heard about volleyball, soccer, golf and gymnastics. We love our Warriors, and they appreciate you –the friends, family and fans. But not everyone is able to participate in Union athletics. Say your class load is really heavy this year but you want to join some group activity that offers time to hang out with friends as well as get some good exercise, what do you do? You sign up for intramurals.

Intramural sports offer a place for students, alumni, CVA students, and even UAU alumni to come together and play sports a few times a week. We started out the year with flag football. This lasted until the weather became cold and the wind turned from balmy fall breezes to frigid winter wind chills. So, for the winter, we are now turning to indoor activities, which brings us to our next sport: volleyball.

There are nine volleyball teams, and each team consists of about 8-9 players. Every Monday and Wednesday night at Reiner Wellness Center, matches are held between teams. Even though it is for fun, there is a little friendly competition happening as the teams are competing for the championship title, and the date is coming fast. The first weekend of February is when these important matches will be held. In the few days before February, playoffs will take place and the best teams will compete to see who comes out on top.

Now, intramural sports would not be possible without our athletics coordinators. These staff and students are working hard behind the scenes to ensure you have the best time as you participate. Mia Luna, a sophomore nursing major from Houston, TX, is managing all the teams and schedules for volleyball intramurals. When asked about her job she said this: “Intramurals is really fun because not only am I able to see other people play and enjoy the sport that I love, but I’m also able to be with people that I care about. It has been a great opportunity to work with this team and gain leadership experience.”

The next intramural sports that will be happening are basketball and soccer, respectively. When February rolls around, don’t forget to sign up for intramural basketball!
