MLK Tournament

Over the long weekend of January 16-19, Union hosted the Annual MLK Invitational. The four participating teams were the Kansas Christian College Falcons, Southwestern Adventist University Knights, Andrews University Cardinals, and, of course, our very own Union Warriors. Normally, Union would not be able to play these two Adventist teams, (KCC is in our division and we play them a few other times throughout the season.), so it was exciting to be able to come together, compete, and fellowship with two other Adventist universities.

The Falcons and the Warriors kicked off the tournament Thursday evening. The Warriors fought hard, but the Falcons gained the victory over both our women’s and men’s teams. However, Friday afternoon, the Warrior men played the Cardinals, and with the crowd cheering and encouraging, the Warrior’s claimed the win. Saturday night, both our women’s and men’s teams played. The men’s game was very close, the Knights pulling ahead in the very end. The women’s team continues to improve, and although they didn’t win Saturday’s game, they showed what they were capable of and how much potential they possess.

The leading scorer for the men was team captain Blake Essex. Over the course of three games, Blake scored 65 points, had 48 rebounds, and 13 assists. Blake said, “I always look forward to the MLK tournaments because it is fun to compete against our sister schools and people we’ve played in the past. The Saturday night worship was great because it connected all the teams when Rico spoke for vespers. I could see the other teams opening up and realizing it was bigger than basketball. It was a little bittersweet since it was my last one, but every game was competitive and I will cherish the memories for the rest of my life.”

For the women’s team, Kassie Abrahamson led with 26 points, 16 rebounds, and 1 assist. Kassie is captain of the women’s team. The Saturday night game was the most well attended game that the women have had all season. Kassie shared how this was special to her. “Having a support group cheering you on at your game is one of the most humbling and special feelings any athlete can feel. Whether it is a packed gym or just my dad in the stands, it makes me feel great to know someone believes in me. Even though our team hasn’t had the greatest season, having a big crowd on Saturday night against SWAU made my heart beat with joy.”

And the season isn’t over yet! We hope to see you in the Thunderdome next month for more Warriors basketball.
