The Love Game: Valentine’s Day fun
On Wednesday February 19, less than a week after the “day of love”, the Student Association and Residential Life teams joined together to throw a Valentine’s Day celebration in Woods Auditorium. Attendees were able to watch a live game show, listen to live musical performances and participate in raffles, all while snacking on waffles and Italian sodas.
The main event was a game show hosted by Union’s chaplain, David “PK” Kabanje, called “The Love Game”. PK said, “Residential Life and SA have done a fantastic job for the past few years of creating opportunities like this for us to come together, to have fun, but also to learn about each other and to learn not to take life so seriously”.
Three couples participated in a trivia game about their partner to determine which couple knew each other best. To make it even more interesting, the couples were all at different stages in their relationships. Union’s President, Dr. Yami Bazan, and her husband Daniel were the participating married couple, having been together for 33 years. Kylee Anderson, a graduate student studying in the OT program, and her fiancé Alex Vieira, a senior in the nursing program, were the participating engaged couple, who had been together for 3 years. Lastly, Payton Arnett and his girlfriend Albany Santeliz Diaz, both undergraduates studying theology, were the participating dating couple who had been together for 14 months.
Throughout the night contestants were asked varying questions about their partners, such as “what is your partner’s biggest fear?” and “what is your partner’s hidden talent?”. By the end of the night, the results were rather unsurprising. Team Bazan won the grand prize with a total of 9 correct answers, followed closely by Kylee and Alex with 7 correct answers, leaving Payton and Albany the third-place position with 5 correct answers. PK wisely shared this sentiment in reaction to the results, “There is something to be said about the more you spend time with somebody, the more you know them.”.
While the game show was the main event, three live performances were performed. Jonah Zwiefel played his accordion, Isabella Mansilla sang “L.O.V.E., accompanied by Sara Mathey and Charles Metz sang his new, original song, “you made me feel human”.
PK closed the night by saying, “We used to have a slogan a long time ago. Our slogan was “Union makes better lovers”. Why we chose that slogan is because when we come together we make each other better at loving: loving each other for who we are, the individuals that God has made us, and also to love the community that God has given us.”.
