Athletic nonsense
Some opinions on sports
As of right now, there’s a lull in athletic events here at Union. We’re in the middle of basketball intramurals, and the Gymnaires are getting ready to head on a tour across the Pacific Northwest over spring break. Other than that, not much is happening. Since there aren’t any particular athletic events going on at the moment, here’s a compilation of student responses to sport-related questions. So, I present to you Athletic Nonsense: Some Opinions on Sports.
What is the best sport and why?
“It has to be football. Not soccer, football. For the impact that it has in the world… It involves a lot of sacrifice and discipline, and it connects a lot of families, even though it's not every year. The World Cup has a lot of impact on the world compared to other world championships. That's one of the reasons why I think soccer is the greatest sport. Football, not soccer.” -Moises Cruz-Lopez, theology pre-law
What sport has the best athletes? Why?
“My biased opinion? Gymnastics because you have to combine flexibility, strength, and adaptability. That you can say for any sport, but I'm biased.” -Dom Murrell, biomedical science
What is your favorite NBA team, and why are they the best?
“I'd say my favorite team is the San Antonio Spurs. The reason why I love that team is because of how they've rebuilt from their legacy 10 years ago. They’ve had some struggles because a lot of players are retiring, a lot of legends, and they're building a young team with players like Victor Wembanyama and Stephon Castle. And seeing them winning games against big teams makes me happy, and watching another 7-foot-tall dude ruling the whole league. It's nice to watch honesty. I just love it.” -Yann Birasa, business
What was the best sport/game from elementary school?
“Oh, I think soccer, probably. It was the most fun. I liked playing in the winter. It added an extra challenge.” -Sydney Bowers, biomedical science
Who is your favorite NFL player and why?
“Derek Henry. I'm a Titans fan. And he did so much, and we wasted so much of his potential. I feel so bad. But I still love that man.” -Alex King, computer science and math
Should curling be a sport?
“No, I'm sorry, but... I don't understand what's happening. I mean, I guess it's kind of muscle energy? Like, ooh, scrub it. I just don't think it's really legit. No offense to all the curlers, but…” -Sarinah Tjhatra, biomedical science
What’s the best winter Olympic sport?
“I think it's hockey, because it is really funny how guys lose their teeth just for the game. Yeah, like the American team, one of our players lost his teeth, you know? Yeah, that was real funny. By the end of the game, you're like, oh man, I miss something in my mouth.” -Joram Kalumba, biomedical science
If you could create your own sport, what would it be?
“But imagine this: TAG, but with tennis rackets and paintballs instead. And you have to tag people by hitting them with the paintballs, but with tennis rackets.” -Jade Garcia and Susan Condado, biomedical science
And that concludes the opinions of your fellow students on random sports questions. Thanks for reading!
