Standing Firm in Faith: Garrett Fourtney’s Testimony

Choosing Conviction Over Conformity

The ambiance was vibrant at College View Church as people from different academies joined Union in its Family Worship. All were friendly as the crowd found those whose birth months matched. Yann Birasa and Giovanna Souza took to the stage to light the Sabbath candles with a birthday surprise, adding to the fun. Yami Bazan also went up front to pray over the people helping in making hosting the Tournament possible. Shortly after, the worship team sang songs such as “The Blood” and “So Will I”.

Garrett Fourtney began his discourse by sharing the story of his basketball career, which began in 5th grade. Fourtney was open about the challenges of being an Adventist when playing for his second team. Garrett felt the pressure of ignoring his faith to conform to the flow of the team, and yet he chose to stand firm. The dedication of Fourtney would be honored by God as the coach went out of his way to schedule games on days other than the Sabbath. Garrett had tremendous success in his games to the point of becoming the top 3-point shooter in the state. In all that success, Fourtney realized that his achievements weren’t as satisfying as he thought they were. He turned to helping his teammates become better, which brought him immense joy and fulfillment.

Also in his discourse, he read and broke down the scene where Daniel and his friends are challenged with their diets. He stated that the Babylonians wanted to impose their customs and traditions on the men, similar to the attitude of the modern world, but the men refused to give in. Fourtney shared the story of Desmond Doss, who wanted to serve during World War II, but he faced challenges that ranged from mockery to possible expulsion. Doss stood firm in his loyalty to God and his commitment to help others. Desmond proved to be invaluable to the Army as he bravely rescued wounded soldiers under heavy fire. Garrett shared three tips for being firm on beliefs, which are to decide before pressure comes, stay consistent in small things, and trust God in all outcomes. Fourtney emphasized the importance of preparing before trials become crucial.

No matter what your situation is, God is present and wants to help you if you let him. One of the best things you could do for yourself is to let Him lead. God will give you everything that you need; all it takes is to ask for His hand.
