Carrie Underwood Sparks Controversy
Carrie Underwood gave a stunning performance at President Donald Trump’s inauguration last week, but the entire event has been surrounded by drama and controversy. The inauguration took place with hundreds of celebrities in attendance. Others refused to watch or attend the ceremony, resulting in the smallest viewing of a presidential inauguration since 2013.
Underwood’s rise to fame began on American Idol, when she won the fourth season. She became one of a small number of artists who gained popularity following her time on the talent show. There have been a few others (One Direction, Kelly Clarkson, Susan Boyle and more) who have risen to such heights after winning on a show. She has sold thousands of records and given countless performances since she gained fame.
Following President Trump’s inaugural address, country music star Carrie Underwood began to perform “America the Beautiful” for the crowd. Unfortunately, she was met with technical difficulties. The track used as background music for Underwood’s performance gave the technicians trouble, leading to an awkward pause that lasted for a few minutes. This prompted the singer to encourage the crowd to sing along with her as she began the first words of the song a cappella. As she continued to sing others joined in. This led to quite the moment, with people from different political views and ideals singing together in unity. The moment ended with applause.
Her performance, however, sparked controversy. Though not due to the technical difficulties or Underwood’s improvisation, celebrities and politically-inclined citizens have begun addressing the fact that Carrie Underwood sang at the inauguration to begin with. Many have taken to social media or talk shows to discuss this event. Some claim that she contradicts what she stood for in the past by taking this opportunity. Others say that she had a choice not to perform and that she should have refused. It seems that she simply wanted to honor her country while moving back into the spotlight of pop culture and fame.
When asked about the situation, she informed reporters that she was “humbled to answer the call at a time when we must all come together in the spirit of unity and looking to the future.” She did just that, drawing people of opposing views to sing together, despite their differences.
