School can be a lot

Try these activities to relax and unwind

As students, we know all too well that classes, work, and homework can be very stressful. However, there are many things that you can do to unwind, relax, and let go of all the stress that piles up and causes you to feel disoriented.

For starters, try journaling. If you have a notebook or just a plain piece of paper to write on, jotting down thoughts about the various stressful situations will help you get the tension off your shoulders. Just putting the words on paper can make a big difference.

Second, listening to music is another way that can help you relax. Simply click into your music app and pick one of your favorite songs that you just can’t get enough of. Press play, get up and dance it out if you want, and if you're feeling a little bold, try to sing along to the song! But remember the quiet times put in place, you don't want to disturb the people around you.

Third, reading may also help you relax. Finding a good and comfortable spot — whether it be lying on your bed or floor, the community room, or even sitting in a favorite coffee cafe can allow you to take your mind off the things that are bothering you. Just grab a good book from your shelf; if you don't have any of your own, visit Union’s campus library. You can also pick up your Bible and find some of your favorite verses. Just let God’s word flow through you and let the weight fall off your shoulders.

Last, movement and exercise can be wonderful for de-stressing. You can walk outside and enjoy the autumn colors. Heading to the gym and jumping on a treadmill, stationary bike, stairmaster, or even hitting the weight room will help with the stress you are feeling. Playing your favorite sport can help get you out of the stressful funk that school, work, and assignments might put you through. Just get your body moving. Exercise is definitely a very important way to get rid of stress. If I had to rank one way that I would get rid of stress, exercise is ranked number one.

There are so many other things out there that can help with stress, even a hobby you have, like drawing, painting, or playing your favorite instrument.
